The purpose of the preparatory year (APS), given at ENACR, is to prepare students to enter a curriculum leading to post-graduate diplomas. The admission to APS is based on an entrance examination.
At the end of this preparatory year, students may apply to entrance examinations in schools offering higher education trainings.
It is thus possible, but not necessary, to apply for the common course ENACR/CNAC, consisting in a three-year program leading to a Higher National Vocational Diploma for Circus Artists (level II diploma).
Succeeding in ENACR’s first two years (APS and DNSP1) allows the student to get a BATC (Circus Techniques Artistic Certificate). This level IV diploma, awarded jointly by the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture and Communication, is recognised throughout Europe as a high-school graduation diploma (French baccalauréat level).
CNAC and ENACR have built a three-year common educational track, in collaboration with the Unit of Training and Research for Arts of the Jules Verne University in Amiens. This course allows the awarding of a Circus Artist Higher Vocational Diploma (level II) and the possibility of obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts, with a specialisation in Circus Arts. The latter is being issued by Jules Verne Picardie University. This process comes within the scope of the European plan for higher education (Bologna’s Process).

THE TRAINING’S GOALS
The conception of an artistic training takes into account the profession’s practice conditions, as defined by the BATC and the DNSP for Circus Artists, and depends on the goal it wants to achieve according to the art it is serving.
Considering a circus show as a work of art implies significant training. The educational project, conceived by CNAC and ENACR, translates this artistic choice. Its objective is to lead students towards a meaningful circus of creation that acknowledges the era it evolves in.
This course aims to shape creative performers, thinking artists that will be able to use their art, their artistic personality, and their skills to serve someone’s else project: a circus director, a theatre director, a choreographer, a movie director, a musician, or a performer. Students who want to engage in the path of the author and who have a research project will be assisted during the second period of the professional integration.
The educational program thus allows to:
● favour the professionalization of future artists by the acquisition of higher technical and artistic skills in a circus discipline (virtuosity helps in creating a vocabulary that allows to express a purpose. The richer the vocabulary, the freer the expression);
● favour the blossoming of the future artist’s personality by individualising the education, while developing openness and flexibility
● help the future artist with understanding artistic commitment, with creating his or her own approach, and with being part of society and modern creation, notably by creating conditions favourable to the critical analysis of art, to creativity and to boldness.
● sharpen the performer’s qualities and frame acting as a space of freedom and invention
● Gain autonomy in the following: training, proper physical preparation, creative processes, safety and equipment assembly, as well as career management.
The educational program gives the students a toolbox, filled with techniques, knowledge and know-how. It is conceived as a 3-or-4-year program, with full artistic and educational coherence between ENACR and CNAC.
The unified course between Rosny-Sous-Bois’s ENACR and Châlons-en-Champagne’s CNAC was put in place with the help of the Picardie University for the Arts.
